01THE TEACHING SPRINT & NARRATIVE

A Week in Cirebon: Backpacking, Linux Hacking & Teaching from Absolute Zero

How a competitive teaching selection led to dormitory life, overcoming hardware shortages, and opening a new digital world through relentless patience.

"That one week taught me that even the most basic knowledge, when shared with the right amount of patience, can open up a whole new world for someone else."
Chapter 01

The Backpacking Journey & Dormitory Immersion

When my school opened applications for a fully funded teaching program at the Hajar Abyadl Islamic Boarding School in Cirebon, I immediately signed up. After passing a strict selection process based on my academic records and an interview, I was chosen to go. The trip from Bogor to Cirebon via public transportation with my friends turned into a real backpacking adventure that tested our independence and resilience. For a whole week, we lived in the school's dormitories with the local students. Blending into their daily routines from morning prayers to evening study circles was a valuable experience that forced me to quickly adapt to a completely new environment and culture.

Chapter 02

Absolute Zero, Hardware Shortages & The Surprise Linux Machine

Teaching the classes was a completely different challenge. The students were primarily focused on religious studies, so the world of IT was entirely foreign to them. Some were touching a laptop for the very first time, which meant we had to teach everything from absolute zero. Hardware limitations added to the struggle: because their school laptops couldn't handle the coding software, we lent our own personal laptops to the students, leaving just one device for our team to run the presentations. To make things even more chaotic, we discovered one of the school's laptops ran on Linux. My technical skills were suddenly put to the test as I had to figure out how to set up a coding environment on an unfamiliar operating system right on the spot so the student wouldn't fall behind.

Chapter 03

Dropping Jargon, Finding Relief & Opening New Worlds

Teaching technology to absolute beginners required a massive amount of patience. We had to drop all the fancy tech jargon and break down the concepts using everyday analogies. But all the exhaustion disappeared on our last day. When we gave them a final evaluation quiz, seeing these students successfully answer basic web development questions with great scores was incredibly relieving. That one week taught me that even the most basic knowledge, when shared with the right amount of patience, can open up a whole new world for someone else.

03PEDAGOGICAL RETROSPECTIVE

Pedagogical Lessons from Cirebon

Essential insights gained from living with students, teaching without jargon, and adapting under hardware constraints.

Patience Unlocks What Jargon Destroys

When someone is touching a laptop for the first time, throwing technical buzzwords creates panic. Meeting learners at absolute zero with everyday analogies transforms intimidation into curiosity and confidence.

Engineering Extends Beyond Code

From sacrificing our own laptops so students could code to configuring an unexpected Linux workstation on the fly, being a true engineer means solving resource bottlenecks with calm adaptability.

Sharing Knowledge Compounds Purpose

Watching santri who began the week without knowing how to hold a mouse triumphantly score high on their web exam proved that technical knowledge gains its highest meaning when used to empower others.
